What are the 4 essentials we cannot leave home without, be without in the car or in the office or be without on a date?

1. Keys

2. Wallet

3. Phone

4. Gums, mints, and other breath fresheners

This is how important and integral our breath quality is to the quality of our daily lives.  Unfortunately up to now in reference to #4 our only option was to use breath fresheners such as gums and mints and mouthwash to cover up our bad breath.  Well now we can all experience what not having bad breath versus covering up could be like.  At Bad Breath Institute we remove bad breath first.

Bad Breath is like Body Odor

Many patients who visit our clinic are under the misimpression that there is something terribly wrong with them.  Many times the problem is not the person concerned with halitosis but the way the industry has been dealing with removing and reducing bad breath.

Bad breath just like body odor is caused by bacteria.  This is why there can never be a cure for bad breath.  The day that we can cure body odor where we do not need to take shower anymore, would be the day we can cure bad breath.  Just like the body, the mouth which is the source of 90% of bad breath needs to be washed as well.  However unlike the body, the industry dealing with bad breath and fresh breath has been guiding us to address bad breath via breath freshening agents (gums, mints, mouthwash, toothpaste etc.).  This approach is incorrect.  Breath fresheners are perfume like products and they mask bad breath.  The day we can only spray perfume on our bodies and not need to take shower anymore would be the day that breath fresheners would work as a bad breath removing agent.

To achieve fresh breath, we need to first remove bad breath.  To achieve a pleasant smelling body, we need to first wash our body and remove body odor.  This is the missing piece in the world of dealing with bad breath for which Bad Breath Institute® has a proprietary solution for.  The processes of removing body odor and bad breath are very similar; they cannot be product based.  They have to be procedure (treatment) based. Washing one’s body to remove odor causing bacteria is a procedure.  A similar approach should be implemented to removing bad breath; it must be procedure based not just product based.  Hence the need to first remove bad breath via our proprietary Airigation® treatment.

For those asking the question “But I brush my teeth twice daily?” Brushing is for oral- hygiene and having healthier teeth.  It is as a side-effect of the breath freshening agent in the toothpaste that we tend to think tooth brushing is for removing bad breath and achieving fresh breath.  If you brush without toothpaste, you will realize there is no freshening effect.

Here is what to do incase you suffer from bad breath

We all suffer a bit of bad breath or halitosis from time to time. The Bad Breath Institute in the US says that 99 per cent of us suffer from the condition when we wake up. This is because, during the night, we don’t produce the necessary saliva to wash away the bad bacteria that causes bad breath.

So you have bad breath. Here’s what to do about your hellish halitosis

Bad breath is the ultimate mood killer. It can ruin a first date in less than a second, but it can plague sufferers for years.

When someone says to you, ‘Got a mint?’, it can mean one of two things. One: perhaps they just fancy a mint, or two (and far more likely): they think you need one yourself because of your stinky breath.

We all suffer a bit of bad breath – or halitosis – from time to time. The Bad Breath Institute (yes, it exists) in the US says that 99 per cent of us suffer from the condition when we wake up. This is because, during the night, we don’t produce the necessary saliva to wash away the bad bacteria that causes bad breath.

Our patients are happily reporting that the Airigation® treatment is not only effective after eating spicy and garlic food but also very effective as a preventive treatment before consuming such food.  Therefore it has proven very effective to get an Airigation® treatment before a hot and spicy dinner/date as the treatment effectively battles embarrassingly strong odor containing food.

We are continuously getting updates from our patients that the Airigation® treatment is increasing their social self-confidence as well as magnifies the effects of breath fresheners used after spicy food consumption.

As evidenced in some of our testimonials, even "Gumbo" is no match for Airigation®!

First of all I would like to thank everyone for their kind words and remarks regarding our treatments and our approach.  I understand many cannot travel to come to Los Angeles for treatments and would like to see a Bad Breath Institute® location in their neck of the woods.

I am also very aware of interested consumers asking us about Bad Breath Institute® labeled and supported products for personal and home care in dealing with halitosis.

I can excitedly update all interested parties that I am very actively examining all options to make our proprietary and brand name products and services available on a large scale to patients and consumers.

Stay tuned for further updates and once again thank you for your interest and support.

Bad breath is personal, especially when it is everyday bad breath and non-chronic halitosis.  Bad breath to the person concerned and affected is simply; bad breath.

There is no right or wrong level of bad breath.  It is similar to how we evaluate body odor.  Some people can go a few days without taking shower and others have to take shower everyday and some twice daily.  This is based on how one perceives body odor and how sensitive he/she is about it.

Likewise, certain individuals are more sensitive and self-conscious about their bad breath than others.  There is no scale or right measure of sensitivity to bad breath.  Bad breath can be subjective and be perceived differently by different people.  This is why my non-invasive Airigation® treatment is easily applicable to patients.  It can be applied as a treatment or as a grooming procedure.  Whether on a recommended basis or as needed by clients and can be performed as often as the individual desires it.

Patients who seek voluntarily to correct dental disease such as cavities, gum disease or even misaligned and discolored teeth usually have a much higher self-confidence levels than patients who only go to the dentists out of necessity or pain associated with a tooth or a dental condition.

A bright smile, a nicely aligned dentition and a fresher breath can significantly improve one’s personal confidence as well as social acceptance.

How to tell someone they have bad breath

We have all experienced a loved one, a friend or a co-worker having bad breath. The dilemma is how to tell these individuals about their condition without angering them, embarrassing them or making them defensive.

Diplomacy is always a good strategy.  A hint of breath freshener could be a good start.  For example if in person, you can offer the individual a stick of gum or some mint and use that action as an excuse to open up discussion about the subject.  You can say that you have become more self-conscious about your breath as sometimes you felt you were not aware of the possibility of having bad breath.  You can give a reason that one of your friends hinted you at one occasion after you had lunch that contained onions.  Hence, you can ask the individual if by any chance he/she had lunch with onions!  The blame of bad breath gets passed onto the “onion” while the opportunity for you has now opened up to recommend the individual to get his bad breath checked out and treated.

Another means of hinting someone about their bad breath is simply sending them a hint electronically to get their attention.  We have implemented the “Send a hint” function on our website specifically for this purpose.  Certain individuals will respond better to a subtle hint, in the privacy of their time and relate to the hint, therefore seeking professional assistance.

If all else fails and it is a matter of your relationship with the person or else… just come out and say it straight out!

It is commonly known that many do not like going to the dentist.  One of the most common statements made to me by my patients is “Doc, I really don’t like going to the dentist”.

There are numerous reasons why fear is a factor when going to the dentist.  It can be a prior bad experience, especially as a child, stories heard from others regarding their experiences and most importantly, fear of the unknown.

To compensate for any of these concerns, an important factor is to “show and tell” to patients what they can expect from their visits.

Since patients do not see (and many do not want to see) procedures performed and these procedures are performed by the dentist outside of patient’s control, many feel vulnerable and fearful.  There are simple steps that can be taken by dentists to ensure patient comfort and a drastic reduction in patient’s “white knuckle” syndrome.  This is a terminology which depicts a fearful patient grabbing the dental chair armrests so hard where his/her hands and knuckles turn white.

A few simple steps which we follow can be taken to reduce and eliminate patient fear and phobia.

  • Show and tell:  I explain to patients and let them understand the procedure I am about to perform so that the anticipation of the unknown is reduced.
  • Put the patient in control:  I always advise my patients to raise their hand anytime they feel pain, discomfort, restless or for any other reason they need me to stop.
  • Getting to know my patients:  I am a firm believer of spending time to get to know my patients in person, their expectations as well as their dental, oral and/or bad breath conditions.  Diagnosis is extremely important.  Proper diagnosis leads to proper care.  This only happens by a detailed first appointment with the patient.  This means spending quality one-on-one time with patients and staying away from “production-line” dentistry.

As a global rule a dentist should treat every patient as he/she would treat his family members…with care!

Beautiful teeth are a sign of health and youth.  It gives a person self confidence and a willingness to smile more often which reflects positively on first impressions.

Just as bad breath is a nuisance and can affect ones self confidence, so do teeth that are yellow, malaligned and stained.

This is not only true socially but generally goes hand-in-hand with oral health.  Proper alignment and correctly contoured teeth not only look beautiful but can naturally contribute to less food and bacterial entrapment between teeth leading to lower number of cavities (which are caused by bacteria) as well as less bad breath.

This is why general and cosmetic dentistry is an integral part of ones goals to reduce bad breath.

With the recent increase in online dating, many who meet for the first time attempt to have their best presentation during this initial encounter.  The checklist for this exciting rendezvous includes wallet, keys, perfume, make up as well as gums, mints and other breath fresheners.

A 5,000 member survey by match.com showed, when dating, more people are concerned about having fresh breath than stylish clothes, sexy fragrance and great hair…combined!

The nuisance in trying to have fresh breath is to continuously try to refresh ones breath with temporary breath fresheners before, during and after a date.  The reason for this is that the common approach to having fresh and clean breath is to continuously cover up bad breath.  This is why breath fresheners will have to be consumed continuously.  This continuous consumption is not only annoying but also can get very expensive.

An example of this activity which I discuss with my patients is regarding bathing and body hygiene.  When we feel dirty, we take off our old clothes, take a shower, put new clothes on and then use perfumes to enhance our smell.  We do not continuously put perfume on many days old clothing without bathing!

Yet this is exactly what we have been conditioned to do when it comes to our mouth and bad breath.  We are continuously covering up bad breath without first treating it.  Our mouth needs a bath too!  This is why it is important to first treat bad breath in order to achieve longer lasting fresh breath.

Treating bad breath should be a part of our daily regimen.  Just as brushing teeth and getting professional teeth cleaning, your bad breath can be treated and controlled.  This is why I recommend to my patients to have a professional treatment done before a special occasion, a wedding, a job interview or an exciting date.

Your attention will be shifted to enjoying this special event instead of worrying if your breath smells.

Many in the fields of Sales and marketing such as auto, real estate and mortgage, department store and retails clerks among other sales positions, are continuously speaking and communicating verbally with clients throughout the day.  I myself as a dentist in close proximity with patients and continuously consulting clients know the nuisance of dry mouth leading to a tired and heavy breath.  As the day goes on the bad breath gets heavier and our self-consciousness about the quality of our bad breath rises.  Instead of focusing on our jobs we start to pucker our lips, increase our distance from others or keep popping mints to keep the bad breath from getting to our clients.

With proper understanding of how bad breath works, these situations can be controlled much easier.

First, one must control the level of bacteria that causes bad breath.  Once the bacteria are brought under control, the heavy and tired feeling of our mouth will subside significantly.  Combining such professional and at home treatments with proper hydration and nutritional snacking throughout the day will assist the talking sales person to have a lighter feeling mouth and a cleaner feeling breath.

Brushing and oral hygiene after every meal during work hours will significantly increase the effectiveness of a longer lasting fresh and clean breath as well.

Properly addressing bad breath could easily be implemented in our daily routines as a normal grooming and hygiene regimen such as hand washing.
